Watsonville is the second largest city in Santa Cruz County, ranking behind only the county seat in terms of population. Watsonville has approximately forty four thousand three hundred residents, and is located near the border that Santa Cruz County shares with the city of Salinas and Monterey County. Watsonville’s primary economic activity is agriculture, specifically the cultivation of tasty berries and mushrooms. This commercial concentration is evidenced by the number of food companies that have their headquarters in Watsonville, including Martinelli’s, Driscoll’s Strawberries, Sweet Darling Strawberries, and West Marine Dole. The most common exports from the area include blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and mushrooms, although numerous other fruits and vegetables are also produced. Watsonville directly borders the waters of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, giving many condominiums and houses in the region fantastic views of the ocean, forests, and mountains. Watsonville enjoys generally mild winters and pleasant weather throughout almost the entire year, while the Monterey Bay Sanctuary is directly adjacent to the community. Watsonville was originally inhabited by indigenous people for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans and Mexicans in the mid eighteenth century, and continues to bear a wide variety of cultural heritages and legacies. Some notable cultures that have a had a significant impact on Watsonville include Filipino, Chinese, African American, Mexican, European, and Japanese, as evidenced by a number of annual festivities and ethnic celebrations.
Watsonville was originally founded in the year eighteen fifty two, was officially incorporated in the year eighteen sixty eight, and was named after Judge John Watson. Watsonville is located in a part of Santa Cruz County called the Pajaro Valley, which is a great location for birdwatching, as the English translation of its name might suggest. There are more than two hundred species of birds in the region, and other popular recreational activities include swimming, boating, fishing, biking, hiking, snorkeling, and just relaxing in the California sun. Watsonville is home to a number of orchards, nurseries, and historic stores and homes, especially along the community’s main street and in the Watsonville Plaza. Meanwhile, the educational needs of Watsonville are met by twelve public elementary schools, six public middle schools, Watsonville High School, New School Community Day, and Pajaro Valley High School in addition to five charter schools, five private schools, and a number of nearby colleges and universities.
