A little about Felton

Felton is a very small census-designated place found in the middle of Santa Cruz County, California. Felton has a population of only about one thousand fifty residents, and is situated in a generally rural and mountainous portion of the Golden State. Felton takes its name from Mayor John Brooks Felton of Oakland, and was originally settled in the middle portion of the nineteenth century. Felton began a period of relatively rapid growth with the influx of the railroad and logging industry in the year eighteen seventy five. Rather ironically, the redwoods that were once the target of numerous logging camps are now mostly protected and one of the biggest tourist attractions in the area. One notable historic site in the region is the water powered sawmill on Mount Herman, which was California’s first and a major boon to local logging efforts. Another worthy destination is the logging camp and depot constructed by the Roaring Camp and Big Trees tourist railroad, which is a meticulous and fascinating reconstruction of a circa 1880s facility. The site includes the Santa Cruz, Big Trees and Pacific Railway, the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the South Pacific Coast Felton depot/freight shed.

Felton is found in the beautiful and highly scenic San Lorenzo Valley, high above the hustle and bustle of the coastal cities, but still only a short drive away from the convenience offered by these communities. Towns, including Felton, in the San Lorenzo Valley, sometimes boast incredible views of the mountains, valleys, forest, and even the ocean. Popular recreational activities in this peaceful and tranquil mountain village include hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, and just sightseeing. Santa Cruz County in general is known for wide range of historic sites, scenic lookouts, and fantastic opportunities to just relax in the peaceful atmosphere.

Despite its somewhat remote location and small town aura, Felton sacrifices very little in the way of convenience. Felton is within a half hour drive of most of the other communities of Santa Cruz, including cities such as Capitola, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville in addition to smaller communities including Amesti, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Corralitos, Live Oak, Rio Del Mar, Soquel, and Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley. Public schools located near Felton in the San Lorenzo Valley and Santa Cruz County include San Lorenzo Valley Middle School, San Lorenzo Valley High School, and San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School as well as regional private schools.
