A little about Capitola

Capitola is a scenic, medium sized tourist city found on the Pacific Coast of the state of California. Capitola has a population of approximately ten thousand one hundred residents, although that figure can change considerably depending on the number of visitors present at any given time. Capitola is considered a part of Santa Cruz County, and is named after the heroine of E.D.E.N. Southworth’s novel “The Hidden Hand”. Capitola was originally founded by Samuel A. Hall in the year eighteen seventy four, and is located along beautiful Monterey Bay. Capitola offers beautiful beaches, fantastic ocean views, and a great shopping and dining district near the wharves and coastline. Capitola is situated between Aptos and Live Oak, and the downtown region of the city is located between two cliffs directly above the beaches. Capitola is served by a number of local newspaper and radio stations, and was home to a notable skateboarding event back in the nineteen seventies and eighties. Educational opportunities in Capitola are offered by a combination of public and private institutions, including New Brighton Middle School, harbor High School, Del Mar Elementary School, Green Acres School, Carden School of Santa Cruz, and Cypress Charter High School as well as colleges located in San Jose and Santa Cruz.

Capitola boasts a number of outstanding cultural and historic points of interest in addition to generally moderate weather and a great location. Some of these sites include the Capitola Museum and the Capitola Village in addition to a number of annual events and festivities. Capitola is home to a number of fantastic beach parks and recreational facilities as well as the Capitola Community Center, health/fitness classes, sports teams, and tennis courts. Capitola is known for its architecturally unique seaside vistas, which are reminiscent of the town’s status as the oldest ocean vacation community. Capitola is a great place to go shopping for souvenirs, build a sand castle, or just relax in the California sunshine. Although Capitola has its own heritage and cultural legacy, it is also convenient to the other cities, towns, and communities of Santa Cruz County. Some of these fascinating and enjoyable population centers include Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Watsonville, Opal Cliffs, Aptos, Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley, Twin Lakes, Amesti, Day Valley, Felton, Freedom, Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Interlaken, Rio Del Mar, and Live Oak. Additionally, the much larger city of San Jose is only about thirty miles away, and offers a number of shopping and dining destinations larger than those found in Santa Cruz County.
