A little about Santa Cruz County
Santa Cruz County is a predominately suburban county found along the coast of California. Santa Cruz County is situated directly to the south of San Francisco and the Bay Area and is considered a part of the Monterey Bay Area. In addition to its scenic location along the northern coast of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz County offers a storied history and rich culture dating back past the incorporation of the county in the year eighteen fifty. Santa Cruz County was one of the original counties of the state, and was originally settled by Europeans in the year seventeen ninety seven. This region was originally known as “Branciforte”, a tidbit of history that lives on in the form of a local waterway; Branciforte Creek. Santa Cruz County was once home to Mission Santa Cruz, from which it derived its modern name. Although the original mission was destroyed by an earthquake, a replica of the historic site was constructed in the early twentieth century as a memento to the strong legacy of missions and missionaries in southern California. Santa Cruz County borders the Pacific Ocean in addition to Monterey County, San Benito County, Santa Clara County, and San Mateo County. The major cities of Santa Cruz County are Capitola, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, and Watsonville, while other notable communities and towns include Aptos, Ben Lomond, Bonny Doon, Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Corralitos, Felton, La Selva Beach, Larken Valley, Live Oak, Pasatiempo, and Rio Del Mar.
Santa Cruz County is home to a number of transportation options, including the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District bus system, Watsonville Municipal Airport, state and county routes/highways, and Monterey Bay Academy Airport. More distant travel is facilitated by the slightly more distant facilities of San Jose International Airport, Monterey Peninsula Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and Oakland International Airport. The total population of Santa Cruz County is currently calculated at two hundred forty nine thousand, seven hundred and five residents, a slight decrease since the last federal census was conducted. Educational opportunities in Santa Cruz County are offered by the following school districts – Bonny Doon School District, Happy Valley School District, Live Oak School District, Mountain School District, Pacific School District, Pajaro Valley Joint Unified School District, San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District, Santa Cruz City Schools, Scotts Valley Unified School District, and Soquel Valley Unified School District – in addition to a number of private schools and the University of California Santa Cruz, Bethany University, and Cabrillo College. Santa Cruz County is well known for its winemaking district, which is best exemplified by the highly rated David Bruce Winery and Ridge Vineyards. Santa Cruz County boasts nearly thirty miles of beautiful beach, hiking trails, fishing, great waves, and excellent restaurants. Santa Cruz County is a great destination for birdwatchers in addition to shopping centers such as the Capitola Mall, Rancho Del Mar Shopping Center, the Vault Gallery, the Brown Ranch Marketplace, the Craft Gallery, and the Yarn Place. Notable attractions in Santa Cruz County include the Arboretum at UCSC, Casino Arcade, Santa Cruz Harbor, the Santa Cruz Wharf, Neptune’s Kingdom, the Sierra Azul Nursery, and Lighthouse Point.
