A little about Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond is a very small, unincorporated community found in the San Lorenzo Valley of Santa Cruz County. The San Lorenzo Valley encompasses the towns of Boulder Creek, Brookdale, Ben Lomond, and Felton, and is especially noted for a heavy concentration of massive redwood trees. Ben Lomond in particular and the San Lorenzo Valley in particular are in close proximity to literally millions of these natural wonders, which are known in scientific terms as “Sequoia Sempervirens”. The area around Ben Lomond is generally rural and forested, while the northern part of San Lorenzo Valley is a protected region of woods – Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The census designated place of Ben Lomond has a population of approximately two thousand four hundred residents, and the nearest major body of water is Loch Lomond, a manmade reservoir. Ben Lomond has a generally moderate climate, as the temperature rarely reaches freezing and almost never exceeds eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Despite its tranquil atmosphere and relatively isolated setting in the San Lorenzo Valley, Ben Lomond is quite convenient, as it is found less than fifteen miles away from the city of Santa Cruz and slightly more than thirty miles away from San Jose.

The town of Ben Lomond takes its name from a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, which, just like its Californian counterpart, is located near a body of water named Loch Lomond, although in this case the body of water is a natural and somewhat famous Scottish lake. Ben Lomond is a modification of a Gaelic term that means “Beacon Peak” when translated. Ben Lomond is the place to find Park Hall, a local hub of arts and culture where the Mountain Community Theater produces and performs numerous plays. True to its Scottish heritage, Ben Lomond is home to Highlands Park, which plays host to the Highlands Games Festival. Ben Lomond is found along the beautiful San Lorenzo River, and is only a short drive away from its fellow mountain communities of Boulder Creek, Felton, and Brookdale. Along with the rest of the San Lorenzo Valley, Ben Lomond’s history is heavily based on the logging industry, which left behind such mementos as a still-operating antique railroad. A short drive out of Ben Lomond is enough to reach the major recreational, historic, and cultural attractions of the rest of Santa Cruz County, which include excellent restaurants, museums, theaters, universities, art galleries, beaches, boutiques, shopping malls, parks, and hiking trails.
