A Little about Carmel

Carmel, which is also referred to as Carmel-by-the-Sea, is a relatively small community found in Monterey County, California. Carmel is located on the Monterey Peninsula on the central coast of California. The city is located about one hundred and twenty miles from San Francisco, and more than three hundred miles from Los Angeles. The closest major city is Salinas, found in the Salinas Valley of Monterey County. Carmel has traditionally had a very strong artistic community, including Clint Eastwood, Perry Newberry, and Herbert Heron. Carmel is also known for its remarkable natural scenery and the wide variety of tourist attractions throughout the local area. Carmel is an extremely small community in terms of physical size – the entire town is encapsulated within one and one tenth square miles. The population of Carmel is four thousand eighty-one, which means that the town has a fairly high population density. The history of Carmel stretches back several thousand years, with all indications pointing towards inhabitation by the Esselen people and eventual displacement by the Ohlone. The European history of Carmel-by-the-Sea began in 1542, when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first sailed along the Monterey Peninsula. Colonization did not begin until the late eighteenth century, and was briefly under Mexican control before annexation by the United States. Carmel has a generally mild, Mediterranean climate, with the temperature rarely going above seventy or under forty degrees Fahrenheit. Carmel is a relatively high income area, with a per capita income of nearly fifty thousand dollars. More than one third of the properties in Carmel are vacation homes, which means that the population of the community varies considerably over the course of the year. Carmel has a very strict set of building restrictions, especially in reference to the quantity of trees in the city limits. According to a series of regulations set by the Carmel City Council, buildings have to be constructed around existing trees, while some lots must have additional trees planted on them.

Partially due to its high property values and small physical size, there are no schools located within Carmel by the Sea itself. The community is served by the eponymous Carmel Unified School District, which includes institutions including the Carmel River School, Carmel High School, Tularcitos Elementary School, and Carmel Middle School. Carmel is especially well known for being dog friendly in terms of hotel accommodations, relevant businesses, and restaurants that cater to canines. Carmel’s most prominent publication is the Carmel Pine Cone, which is published every week. In terms of music, Carmel is known for the Carmel Bach Festival and the Sunset Center as well as a thriving artistic community. Carmel is also located close to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Cannery Row on Monterey Bay. Perhaps the most prominent historical site in Carmel itself is the Carmel Mission Basilica, which was founded by Father Junipero Serra, who is also buried there. The Basilica often serves as the venue for the Carmel Bach Festival as well as various community events and weddings. Carmel is best known for its beaches and beach parks, including Carmel River Beach, Carmel Monastery Beach, and Carmel Beach. Carmel Village briefly received national attention when actor Clint Eastwood was elected mayor of the community for two years.
