During prehistoric times, the area that is currently Pacific Grove was controlled by the Ohlone Native Americans, a group which was primarily concerned with subsistence farming, fishing, and hunting. As the years progressed, Pacific Grove became a favorite destination for painters, writers, and other types of artists, including noted author John Steinbeck. The larger city of Santa Cruz is found about forty miles to the north, while the major metropolis of San Francisco is situated approximately one hundred and twenty miles in the same direction. Pacific Grove enjoys generally pleasant weather throughout most of the year, including moderate temperatures, occasional fog, and a rainy season between November and April. The enjoyable weather, combined with the oceanfront regions of Asilomar and Lovers’ Point make the Pacific Grove area popular among surfers.
