A Little About Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach, a relatively small unincorporated community in the midst of Monterey County, is one of the best known regional tourist destinations. Pebble Beach is situated on the Pacific Coast, enjoying beautiful weather throughout the year but especially during the early summer months. Because of its small size, Pebble Beach is grouped together with the larger census designated place of Del Monte Forest. At the same time, Pebble Beach has its own post office, and many tourist guidebooks differentiate between Del Monte Forest and Pebble Beach. The modern history of Pebble Beach stretches back to the year 1880, after the region had been acquired from Mexico by the United States. In 1880, the Pacific Improvement Company purchased the Rancho Pescadero land grant, which now includes the property that now comprises Pebble Beach. Pebble Beach eventually came under the control of the Del Monte Properties Company, while the surrounding region became popular among artists, painters, and writers. A group of investors acquired Pebble Beach in 1999, and continues to be owned under the name of the Pebble Beach Company by that group. Pebble Beach is a generally wealthy, upscale community, with a median household income approaching $100,000. More than half of Pebble Beach’s adult population holds a college degree, and less than three percent of the community is considered impoverished. Pebble Beach has a total population of four thousand, five hundred residents, although that figure may have changed since the last census was conducted. The community is bounded by the towns of Carmel by the Sea, Pacific Grove, and Monterey as well as the Pacific Ocean on the west. The larger cities of Santa Cruz and San Francisco are located about an hour (forty five miles) and two and a half hours (one hundred twenty miles) drive away from Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach is well known for its scenic golf courses. The community has a total of seven eighteen hole golf courses, several of which were designed by nationally acclaimed golf architects. Public golf courses owned by the Pebble Beach Company include The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill, and the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Private courses include the Dunes Course and the Shore Course of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club and the Cypress Point Club. Every year, Pebble Beach is home to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, which has taken place every February since 1937. Educational opportunities in the Pebble Beach area are provided by the public school system, including Carmel High School, River School, Carmel Middle School, Pacific Grove High School, Pacific Grove Middle School, and Forest Grove School. Additionally, Pebble Beach is home to the Stevenson School, while a number of colleges and universities are just a short drive away. Some notable residents of Pebble Beach over the years include Clint Eastwood, George Lopez, Charles Schwab, and Greg London. One of the most notable and visually striking features of Pebble Beach is the Lone Cypress, a single tree located on a rock outcropping that stretches into the Pacific Ocean. A second notable landmark of Pebble Beach, the “Witch Tree” at Pescadero Point, was destroyed by a violent storm in the early months of nineteen sixty four. Pebble Beach is one of the entrance points to the 17 mile drive, which is a scenic tour of the Pacific Coast by car. Pebble Beach is a private, gated community which is administered by the Pebble Beach Community Services District. The Del Monte Forest Foundation also exerts some authority over the census designated place, especially in terms of nature preservation and environmental concerns.
